Truckers under the auspices of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners ( AMARTO ) have assured commuters on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway that the long queue of articulated vehicles would disappear before tomorrow (Wednesday).
The Chairman of the association, Chief Remi Ogungbemi, gave this assurance on Monday while fielding question on our sister platform; Shipping Position Live on Star FM.
He explained that the exercise was in two phases, adding that the first phase involved getting the trucks off the roads while the second phase is to see how they will get to the ports.
Chief Ogungbemi also explained that since the exercise involves security agencies and operators it is going to be a fruitful and devoid of harassment.
He said on the radio programme that: “I want to believe that the exercise is a right step in the right direction. They commenced phase one of the exercise from the early hour of Friday till now (Monday). And the stage one is to ensure that all the trucks are out off the roads. And when all the trucks leave the road, we will now move to the second stage which is on the modalities on how to admit the trucks into the ports. And I believe that these exercise will yield the desired result, because it involves not just all the security agencies, it also involves the operators that is, the truckers and the association".
He also said that the traffic of the axis is getting better on a daily basis; even as he confirmed that the exercise is devoid of harassment by security agencies.
"I also want to confirm to you that the exercise is void of any harassment or intimidation; we are able to handle it. The traffic on the axis is getting better every day and I am very optimistic that between today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) things will come back to normal. With the exercise going on, I want to believe that before the end of today the roads will be free. Because what the people are doing is to vacate the whole empty containers and articulated trucks".
He however refused to answer questions about the probable solution to the menace of traffic into and out of Apapa.
