The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA); Hadiza Bala Usman has assured that all those who had a hand in the October 21 and 22, attacks on its properties during the EndSARS protests would be prosecuted.
She also disclosed that, the CCTV footage of the attacks have been retrieved and handed over to relevant authourities.
The Managing Director disclosed this last Friday when she appeared as guest on a Channels Television programme; Sunrise.
According to her, the attack lasted for about two hours before it was contained by personnel of the Nigerian Navy.
Recall that, at the peak of the recent EndSARS protest in Lagos, hoodlums had on October 22, descended on the Marina, Lagos corporate headquarters of the NPA. That was after they had attempted to mete out a similar attack on the Tin Island port the previous day.
During the attack on NPA Headquarters, about 300 hoodlums masquerading as protesters stormed the premises and vandalized several properties, including vehicles and office equipment.
Giving details on Friday, the managing director disclosed that, 27 vehicles, including cars, utility vehicles, pick up vans and staff buses were set on fire, while 33 other vehicles, twenty-two of which belong to members of staff were vandalized”.
She however added that, seven suspects have been apprehended and are in custody, even as she disclosed that, the CCTV footage which contained the attack has been handed over to the Federal and Lagos State Governments to facilitate prosecution of suspects.
Reacting to insinuation of an insider-collusion in the mayhem, the Managing Director ruled it out, saying that “the CCTV footage did not indicate involvement of staff”.
She added that, sadly, a Policeman attached to Tin Can port, died as result of the injuries he sustained during the attack at Tin Can port. She disclosed that the policeman died in the hospital a few days after the attack.
Bala Usman also reiterated that, “all assets of the Authority are comprehensively insured, and insurers are currently undergoing an assessment of the damages “.
