The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA) and other maritime stakeholders have lauded the three year tenure of Comrade Adeyanju Adewale as the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).
The stakeholders said this at different interviews with Shipping Position Daily last week, while assessing the performance of Adeyanju .
The president of Merchant Navy, Engineer Bob Yousuo, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, described the MWUN PG as the best thing that has happened to both MWUN and Merchant Navy.
He expressed readiness to work with the Adeyanju to see how they can both carry seafarers and maritime labour to the next level.
“Adeyanju is the best thing that so far happened to MWUN; it is not just for MWUN alone it crossed over to the Merchant Navy Association. He is a man that has listening ear, just only three years, we at Merchant Navy are still benefitting from his inputs and contributions and I pray that the good Lord will strengthen him and give him longer time”
“His leadership is something worth emulating, I have also worked with him and will continue to work with him, I am looking towards working hand in hand to see how we can carry the seafarers and the maritime labour to the next level by the special grace of God” he concluded.
Also speaking a maritime Lawyer, Emmanuel Nwagbara said that the union is better organized now, adding that the union has shown more understanding.
“I think it is better organized now, it has to be like that, they don’t have a choice than to show more understanding and skill in administration and I think they are doing that. It is not like the times when you hit the table and beat your chest now; I think they are better professionals managing the MWUN right now, better educated people who studied industrial relations and people who understand that industrial relations have to take into consideration the interest of the business they are serving”, he said.
According to him, “In all, I think the Adeyanju administration is doing well and I encourage him to do better. Of course it has to be like that because maritime jobs are more specific now than we used to know them before. Since technology has helped in checking maritime business and work maritime workers have to keep improvement in terms of technology. The leaders have no choice than to key into the new technological advancement and development in the industry. So I think they are doing well and I wish them better performance” he said.
In his assessment, a former president of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr. Eugene Nweke, described Adeyanju’s administration to have demonstrated good leadership vision and policy consolidation.
He said that the union has stood out as a union in the industry that has been consistent, even though he admitted that there would be some challenges.
“If a leadership’s vision and policy consolidation is worthwhile, then the MWUN demonstrated such feat so far. Wherefore, the ideal letters of unionism, which is, effective advocacy aimed to boost the welfare of its members, the MWUN stands out as one union in the industry that has been consistent in this regards, though it cannot go without peculiar leadership challenges.
