Mumbai Port’s Throughput Slips 19 Percent

Throughput at India’s Port of Mumbai fell 19 percent year-over-year in the first two months of fiscal year 2013-14, the port authority said in a statement this week.
Total tonnage during April to May was 8.73 million tons, compared with 10.8 million tons in the same period last fiscal year. Officials said the port had set a target of 10.5 million tons for the two-month period.
Inbound traffic was 6.21 million tons, falling from 7.75 million tons. Outbound volume was 2.52 million tons, down from 3 million tons.

Tonnage in May was estimated at 4.88 million tons, decreasing from 5.27 million tons.
Mumbai’s container terminals handled 6,993 20-foot-equivalent units in April and May, down from 9,691 TEUs a year earlier. Box volume in May dropped to 4,416 TEUs from 5,008 TEUs.
In fiscal 2012-13, which ended March 31, Mumbai handled a record 58 million tons of cargo, up 3 percent from 56 million tons in the previous year. Container throughput was 57,614 TEUs, slipping slightly from 57,760 TEUs in 2011-12.
