The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Monday condemned last week burning of the corporate head office of the Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA) by hoodlums during the EndSARS protests which rocked Lagos and other parts of the country.
The union, in a statement that was signed by its President General; Comrade Adewale Adeyanju said it was shocked by the extent of the destruction of the NPA building in Marina, Lagos.
The union said it was shocked by the magnitude of the destruction that was carried out at the magnificent NPA building and the massive destruction of the properties in the building.
In the statement, the union said: "We the leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria have today being the 26th day of October 2020 visited the Nigeria Port Authority head office at Marina to access the extent of damage wrecked on same by hoodlums on Thursday 22 October 2020
"We are, to say the least shocked by the enormity of damage visited on the magnificent building and the destruction of valuable property, is protest carried too far”.
"While peaceful protest is universally acknowledged as a legitimate instrument usually engaged to draw attention of government to its inadequacies/ mis-governance, but when peaceful protest turns awry and weapons are wantonly used, property looted and damaged and innocent soul wasted it becomes regrettable and counterproductive.
"The wreckage visited on the NPA headquarter building and the looting of the property is protest carried too far and its only vandals whose brains are no longer in right position that can carry out such
"Whilst we condemn in its entirety the barbaric destruction of the building by some misguided youths, we pray that the perpetrators are apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law" the union said.
