The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has strongly denied what it describes as misleading claims regarding the leadership transition following the end of Dr. Adewale Adeyanju’s tenure in a few months.
The union issued a response on Monday clarifying several inaccuracies in a recent article published by a media outfit (not Shipping Position)
The statement addressed a publication from an online media outlet captioned: “MWUN Presidency: Eight Aspirants Jostle to Succeed Adeyanju Amidst Government, Financial Influences,” which was published on January 6, 2025. The MWUN emphasized the importance of public discussions surrounding the union, but expressed concern over the article’s unfounded allegations.
“We would like to set the record straight,” the statement read. “As of January 6, 2025, the union only lifted the ban on campaigns. Forms for those interested in running for leadership positions have not yet been distributed. Therefore, any detailed speculation about potential candidates and their strategies is premature and misleading.”
MWUN also criticized the article’s suggestion that the election process would be influenced by financial and governmental powers. “Such claims are entirely false,” the statement asserted.
“MWUN is a union that operates democratically, according to a well-established constitution. We are committed to conducting fair elections free from external interference and financial manipulation. To imply otherwise undermines the integrity of our process and disrespects our members”, the union stressed.
The union also rejected the idea that past leaders of MWUN would play a role in determining the next president, stressing that the union’s values of discipline, respect for the law, and unity would continue to guide its decisions. MWUN made it clear that leadership will be decided through a democratic process outlined in its constitution.
Furthermore, MWUN acknowledged the recognition of Dr. Adeyanju’s leadership during his time in office.
“We appreciate that the writer highlighted his record of maintaining neutrality and ensuring a fair environment for all candidates. Any assertion to the contrary is purely divisive.”
The union concluded by calling for media outlets to focus on accuracy in their reporting. “The upcoming election is a structured and transparent process that reflects the will of our members, not a political spectacle,” the statement said.
MWUN urged the media to avoid publishing unverified stories that could disrupt the unity of the union and peace in the maritime sector. The statement reaffirmed the union’s commitment to a smooth leadership transition, prioritizing the welfare of its members and the growth of the maritime industry.
The statement was jointly signed by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Media Head of MWUN, and Comrade Erasua Oniha, Deputy Secretary-General.
