As part of efforts to boost import and export trade in the South-Eastern part of the country, the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) is set to develop 142 hectares of land within the Akanu Ibiam International airport in Enugu State into a cargo village.
According to the association, the proposed cargo village is part of bigger project which has the
potentials of creating a wide range of business opportunities in Enugu State and the entire South East geo -political zone.
As part of efforts to boost import and export trade in the South-Eastern part of the country, the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) is set to develop 142 hectares of land within the Akanu Ibiam International airport in Enugu State into a cargo village.
According to the association, the proposed cargo village is part of bigger project which has the
potentials of creating a wide range of business opportunities in Enugu State and the entire South East geo -political zone.
The cargo village project was contained in a statement made available to Shipping Position Daily last week in Lagos, and signed by the association's national publicity secretary; Mr. Simeon Nwonu.
According to the statement, already the National President of NAGAFF; Chief Eugene Nweke has led a delegation of the top echelon of the association on a visit to Enugu for an on-the-spot inspection and assessment of the project site.
The NAGAFF president was accompanied to the site by a representative of its development partners; Mr. Daniel Kalu, NAGAFF Enugu State Chapter; Sunny Okonkwo and the Project Legal Consultant who is also the Secretary of NAGAFF’s Enugu Chapter ; Barrister Chinedum Agwaramgbo.
Accordiong to the association, "the proposed Cargo Village will be situated within the 142 – hectare of land, of the East – Gate Enugu Airport City Development Project adjacent to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu."
Speaking further on the project; Nweke added that top executives of the association, representatives of the Enugu State government and other investors in the state, comprising banks and the construction company that will handle the project are to visit Malaysia in October in order to assess facilities such as the one being proposed and also get prototype of a model.
"The proposed NAGAFF cargo village is to be fashioned after a similar one in Malaysia, and to get a clearer picture of the Malaysia model, a delegation comprising officials of NAGAFF, representatives of the Enugu State Government, and of the investor, NECI Land Development Corporation Limited as well as other 27 business venture companies including the banks will visit the Asian country in October."
Nweke added that the Cargo village when completed will boost and further simplify the process of cargo clearing in the country and help to eliminate congestion at the Lagos ports, pointing out that importers, exporters and freight forwarders will be happy to divert their cargoes to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
"It will encompass the establishment of key investment component such as air cargo terminal logistics hub, high industrial zone, duty free and export zone and commercial and residential real estate", the NAGAFF boss added
