The Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has advised the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service; Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) to also direct junior officers in the service to declare their assets.
The freight forwarding group alleged that some of the junior officers are even richer than some Customs Area Controllers in service.
Vice Chairman of Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit of NAGAFF; Comrade Stephen Ibeh gave the advice in an exclusive chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos.
Ibeh appealed to the Customs boss to synergise with the NAGAFF for a better working relationship, adding that the move to eradicate corruption from the service is commendable.
He equally lauded the directive by the customs boss that senior officers should declare their assets within 14 days.
According to him, corruption and impunity is endemic is customs operations and there is the need to nip it in the bud.
“It’s a laudable move by the CGC to ask his officers to declare their assets and I if I have access to him I will advise him to direct junior officers to also declare their assets as well, because so many of the junior officers are even richer than their boss. ”
“What the CGC is doing now shows that he is working because that is what the government want him to do and what he is doing is the way out of eliminating corruption from the system.”

“What Hameed Ali is doing is correct and anybody in the service who has clean hands need not to worry about asset declaration. “, he added.
