Mr. Aloga Ogbogo, Executive Secretary, Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), has advised the Federal Government to concession road maintenance to private investors.
Ogbogo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
He noted that the amount of money spent on road maintenance in the country was very high.
“The road transport industry is operating in a very chaotic order because of the absence of regulations; I heard that the Federal Government would need about 100 billion to fix the bad roads in this country.
“More than 60 per cent of roads belonging to the Federal Government are in a very bad state; they should work towards giving out the roads to private investors to maintain them and save souls.
“Because time is money, the Lagos-Ibadan way that is supposed to take one hour, thirty minutes, will take one four hours to get there; if the roads are good, you gain time.
“There is no country in the world that government maintains roads; government cannot maintain roads because it is capital intensive.”
He said that spending so much money on roads was not practicable, noting that the Federal Government would be implementing a deficit budget in 2016.
Ogbogo, however, urged the Federal government to pay more attention to the road sub-sector.
