As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the National President of the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), Engineer Bob Joseph Yousuo, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize citizens’ welfare, strengthen security, and uphold good governance to ensure national progress.
In a goodwill message which was made available to our correspondent, Engr. Yousuo commended the resilience and sacrifices of Nigerian seafarers who often spend long periods away from their families in service to the country. He noted that while Nigeria has recorded progress since independence, persistent challenges call for renewed government commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
The Merchant Navy boss urged the Federal Government to place premium on its constitutional mandate by ensuring security, improving access to quality education, and providing essential social amenities such as good roads, affordable electricity, and potable water.
“The government must take decisive steps to address security concerns, especially kidnapping and banditry, which threaten food production. Inflation must also be tackled to ease the burden on citizens,” Yousuo stated.
The NMNOWTSSA President further stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the separation of powers among the three arms of government. He admonished political leaders to put national interest above personal gains, adding that Nigeria’s abundant natural resources should translate into meaningful development.
“No sacrifice is greater than our coexistence. With the endowments at our disposal, we have no business with underdevelopment. Let every Nigerian think Nigeria first before self,” he opined.
Engr Yousuo prayed for a brighter future, good governance, and unity among citizens as Nigeria celebrates 65 years of nationhood.
