The Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers’ and Water Transport Senior Staff Association has fixed January 29th 2016 for its 4th triennial delegate conference which will also usher-in new executives to oversee the affairs of the union for another three years.
Secretary General of the union, Comrade Julius Efokpor disclosed the date to Shipping Position Daily in an exclusive chat in Lagos yesterday, even as he added that the election is expected to hold in Algos hotel in Kubwa Abuja.
According to him, the incumbent President , Engineer Matthew Alalade from Shipping Zone will slug it out with Engineer Reginard Onyenobi from the same zone.
The union has four zones and each of the zones has ten delegate representatives on the day of election.
The zones include: shipping, fishing, offshore and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). At least 40 delegates are expected to cast their votes.
However, Efokpor expressed the union’s readiness for the forthcoming elections saying that a total of twelve positions are to be keenly contested.
He noted that awareness letters for the election date has been sent to all zonal council about the delegate conference.
The scribe revealed that “everything that involved logistics has been taken care of, adding that arrangement for the hotel is also intact.
“We have made up our mind to hold the delegate conference come rain come sun”
“The only problem we are facing is finance, but we know we will come out of it before the fixed date.
The merchant navy union stalwart also added that the number of those expected to vote may increase but at least forty delegates must be on ground to cast their votes for their preferred candidates.
