The Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA) has disclosed that the nation’s seaports experience an upsurge in the gross tonnage of vessels that came into the ports in April, when compared with the corresponding period in 2011.
In its monthly report of April 2012, which was released last week, it was disclosed that total gross tonnage of the ocean going vessels stood at 10,379,398mt which showed 18 per cent  increase over the same period of April 2011 figure of 8,796,865mt.
Similarly, the gross tonnage of the coastal vessels was 722,787mt; an increase of 11.3% over the April 2011 figure of 649,415mt.
Also, in the statement that was signed by the agency’s image maker, Chief Michael Ajayi, cargo throughput in April stood at 6,560,034metric tons which showed a 6.1% increase over the figure of 6,182,534metric tons recorded for same period of April, 2011
Giving a breakdown, NPA said that inward cargo traffic amounted to 4,080,522metric tons, representing 62% of the total cargo throughput, while the outward cargo was 2,479,512 metric tons, representing 38% of the total cargo throughput.
“The ever increasing result being posted could be attributed to continuous regular capital and maintenance dredging and the 100 per cent completion of removal of the discovered critical wrecks in our channels”, the statement explained.
Chief Ajayi also quoted the managing director, Engr Omar Suleiman as promising that “with these impressive results, more efforts will be made to ensure that our ports will be the preferred port in West Africa.”
