The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its readiness to work more closely with the Nigeria Police Maritime Command in the fight against piracy, smuggling, and other illegal maritime activities threatening the nation’s territorial waters.
This came to the fore recently, when the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Maritime Police Command, Musa Yusuf Garba led a high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to the Director-General and CEO of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, at the Agency’s headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos.
During the visit, the NIMASA DG emphasized the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in addressing persistent security threats within Nigeria’s maritime environment. He noted that no single institution can win the fight against maritime crime alone.
“Our resolve to combat threats in our waters is stronger when we work together. The maritime domain presents both economic opportunities and security challenges, and it is only through collaboration with law enforcement agencies like the Maritime Police that we can ensure a safe and thriving sector” Mobereola said.
AIG Garba, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for NIMASA’s continued support and commended the Agency’s leadership for its proactive approach to maritime governance. He described the visit as a reaffirmation of the Command’s commitment to partnering with NIMASA in securing the nation’s waterways.
“Strengthening institutional cooperation is not just a strategic priority; it is a necessity. We will continue to align our operations with NIMASA’s objectives to protect Nigeria’s maritime interests and fulfill our international obligations.” AIG Garba said.
The engagement concluded with both parties agreeing to enhance intelligence sharing, improve joint enforcement efforts, and support the national push toward a robust Blue Economy.
