There are indications that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) may be entering into an arrangement with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in order to key into the establishment of truck track transit parks.
The Shippers’ Council had said that it was establishing ultra modern truck parks across the country in order to bring succor to truck drivers and tanker drivers.
There are indications that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) may be entering into an arrangement with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in order to key into the establishment of truck track transit parks.
The Shippers’ Council had said that it was establishing ultra modern truck parks across the country in order to bring succor to truck drivers and tanker drivers.
Shipping Position Daily scooped last week that the dream of the Council may have attracted the interest of the NNPC in order for it to put an end to the menace of petroleum tankers on Nigerian roads.
The Executive Secretary of the Shippers’ Council, Barrister Hassan Bello however confirmed this to our correspondent last week that the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Andrew Yakubu is set to have a meeting with the Council's boss and its board chairman.
Bello said that the NNPC will be using the truck transit parks for their retail outlets. He added that the Council is partnering investors to build the truck park on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
"We are discussing with the NNPC, the Chairman of the board particularly will soon have a meeting with the NNPC Group Managing Director who are interested in the truck transit parks for their retail outfits", he confirmed.
"The truck transit park is going to be done on a PPP basis because the participation of the private sector is key to the development of this infrastructure"
"We have the concept of truck transit parks in some locations in Nigeria, this is a modern truck facility where truck owners and their drivers will have a rest-stop and refresh, we have motels, garages, repair yards and shopping complexes".
Bello said that this is to ensure that the truck drivers who drive throughout the country will have a place to rest.
The transit park is designed as a resting place for trucks and truckers, it’s a place where long distance drivers will have a place to repose with motels, weigh bridges and other facilities essential in their business.
"We will have retail outfits there, the last time the NNPC were interested in this so that they can have their retail outfit in it"
Bello also said that the Council has also had discussions with Kogi State Government and the Kaduna State Government and they are all very enthusiastic about the project.
"It is going to be done on PPP. We have also been to Ogbulafo in Enugu State. Nigeria cannot be an exception as this happens in every advanced country" he said.
