Contrary to earlier media reports, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that, no life was lost in the pipeline explosion that rocked Tarkwa Bay along Lagos harbour on Wednesday when the pipeline exploded.
Public Relations Officer of the NEMA; Mr Ibrahim Farinloye said yesterday that: “I was surprised today (Thursday) at the reported scores of lives that were lost in the incident.

Public Relations Officer of the NEMA; Mr Ibrahim Farinloye said yesterday that: “I was surprised today (Thursday) at the reported scores of lives that were lost in the incident.
“Nobody died or was roasted in the explosion, we are able to put out the fire on time and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had fixed the damaged pipes.’’
He said NEMA responded promptly to put the situation under control.
“The NNPC has started pumping petroleum products since yesterday,’’ Farinloye added.
The explosion on pipeline which belongs to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, it was gathered, resulted from the activities of pipeline vandals attempting to scoop Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, from a ruptured pipeline.
Officials of the NNPC, at Atlas Cove base, were mobilised to the scene of the incident, saying that all the valves and supplies had been shut to prevent an escalation of the inferno.
Farinloye said there was no casualty, adding that the fire was finally put out by the NNPC fire unit after hours of battling the flames, at around 10am
According to him, the cooling process has commenced, while the pumping of product would soon start.
The pipeline takes petroleum products from Atlas Cove at Apapa to Ejigbo and Mosimi depots in Lagos and Ogun states, respectively.
