The National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has sought the collaboration of the Joint Task Force in Niger Delta to tackle environmental pollution caused by oil spills.
This is contained in a statement by Mr Henshaw Ogubike, the spokesman of NOSDRA, in Yenagoa.
The statement said that the Chairman, Governing Board of NOSDRA, retired Maj. Lancelot Anyanya, led NOSDRA management on a courtesy call to the JTF Commander, Maj.- Gen. Emmanuel Atewe in Yenogoa.
According to the statement, Anyanya as said that the essence of the visit was to solicit the JTF’s support in tackling the menace of oil “spillage caused by third party interference.”
It quoted Anyanya as saying that the roles of JTF and NOSDRA were interrelated and thanking the force for providing security for oil installations and the entire region.
The statement said that Anyanya commended the force for its effort in dealing with the problem of oil theft which resulted in oil spills.
“The support of JTF Commander, his officers and men to NOSDRA in terms of provision of security that enabled us to visit all our target areas within Bayelsa is highly commendable.
“It is imperative that we come here to thank you for your support. We intend to visit the Minister of Defence to thank him for the support given to us by the military,” Anyanya was quoted as saying.
Anyanya applauded the commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan for empowering NOSDRA to tackle oil spill issues.
The statement also quoted the Director-General of NOSDRA, Mr Peter Idabor as saying that the activities of the JTF had made a significant impact in reducing criminality in the oil fields in the region.
According to the statement, Idabor recommended that crude oil captured from vandals and criminals should be disposed appropriately rather than being burnt.
It quoted the JTF Commander, Atewe, as congratulating Anyanya for his appointment and urging him to bring his professionalism and competence to bear in his assignment.
The commander, according to the statement, said that the JTF had zero tolerance for pipeline vandalism and appealed to the perpetrators of oil theft to think twice.
The statement said Atewe affirmed that the health hazard of oil spill would not be a good legacy to future generations, vowing that the battle against oil theft must be won.
