The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has joined the global community in celebrating women in the maritime sector as part of activities marking the International Women’s Day, highlighting the growing role of women in critical operational and leadership positions within Nigeria’s port industry.
In a statement commemorating the annual celebration, the Authority praised the resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions of women working across diverse maritime roles, including firefighting, security operations, piloting, engineering, hydrography, administrative services, and maritime support functions such as aids to navigation.
According to the NPA, women within the organisation are increasingly excelling in positions that have historically been dominated by men, demonstrating competence and professionalism even in roles traditionally perceived to require exceptional physical strength.
The Managing Director of the NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, noted that the Authority has taken deliberate steps to promote gender inclusivity and empower women within the maritime sector. He explained that one of the key strategies adopted under his leadership is the intentional prioritisation of gender balance in critical appointments within his office.
Dantsoho revealed that women currently occupy 60 percent of the positions among his aides and Technical Assistants, while men make up the remaining 40 percent. He described the move as a conscious effort aimed at strengthening female representation and creating opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to policy formulation and operational decision-making in the port sector.
“This intentional step underscores the NPA’s commitment to advancing women’s participation and success across the maritime industry,” the Managing Director stated.
He added that empowering women within the maritime ecosystem is essential for sustainable growth in the sector, noting that diversity in leadership and operational roles enhances innovation, efficiency, and institutional development.
The Authority further commended the remarkable achievements of women across the maritime value chain, stressing that their contributions continue to drive progress, break longstanding barriers, and inspire the next generation of female professionals.
As the world marks International Women’s Day, the NPA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and creating a more inclusive maritime environment where women can thrive and play leading roles in shaping the future of the industry.
