NSC Moves to Close Leadership Gap, Strengthen Regulatory Future with Middle-Manager Training

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has taken a decisive step toward securing its institutional future by launching a targeted succession-planning workshop for middle-level managers, signalling a shift toward long-term leadership stability within the organisation.

Held in Lagos, the initiative reflects growing concerns within the Council about a widening leadership gap caused by rising retirements and evolving regulatory demands in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Representing the Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, the Director of the Consumer Affairs Department, Mrs. Ify Okolue, said the Council can no longer rely on informal grooming of future leaders. She noted that NSC must intentionally prepare the next cadre of managers who will eventually steer the organisation.

“Our goal is to raise competent, confident and future-ready leaders who can drive the Council’s mandate in the coming years,” she said, stressing the need for a structured, merit-based system to identify talent early.

For the Human Resources Management Director, Mustapha Zubairu, the workshop is more than a training programme—it is a strategic response to operational realities. He explained that as senior officers exit the system, the Council risks losing institutional knowledge unless new leaders are systematically prepared.
