The Oniru of Iru Kingdom in Lagos State, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, has thrown his weight behind the upcoming 8th WISTA Africa Regional Conference, pledging his support for the advancement of Nigeria’s maritime sector and confirming his attendance at the event.
The monarch made the commitment while receiving a delegation from the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria at his palace on Wednesday. The delegation was led by the President of WISTA Nigeria, Dr. Odunayo Ani.
Oba Lawal commended the dedication and leadership of Dr. Ani, describing her efforts in securing Nigeria’s hosting rights for the regional conference as commendable. He also praised her contributions to the growth of WISTA both nationally and internationally through her role as Director of Finance at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The traditional ruler further acknowledged the contributions of past leaders of the association, noting that their commitment had helped establish WISTA as a respected platform for women in the maritime industry.
Expressing pride in the conference coming to Lagos, Oba Lawal said the event aligns with the deep maritime heritage of the Iru Kingdom.
“My ancestors lived and thrived on water, and about 80 per cent of our traditional business remains connected to waterways,” he said.
According to the monarch, the Iru community will continue to champion maritime development and support initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s blue economy.
He described the forthcoming conference as a strategic opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its maritime potential and achievements to the international community.
Reflecting on the historical role of his kingdom in maritime commerce, Oba Lawal recalled the contributions of his forebears to the development of Lagos during the colonial era, identifying Eyin-Igbeti as one of the earliest locations where waterborne trade and shipment of goods flourished.
The monarch also lauded the Lagos State Government for its support of maritime-related initiatives and emphasized the importance of preserving the waterways that remain central to the identity and economy of the Iru people.
“The duty of the Oniru is to ensure the ocean and lagoon remain peaceful spiritually. Whatever happens on the waterfront, we receive our royalty. That is why we champion waterfront issues,” he stated.
Oba Lawal noted that Bar Beach was historically a major hub for commerce, transportation, tourism and trade, adding that the waterfront continues to play a vital role in the kingdom’s socio-economic activities.
Reaffirming his commitment to the conference, the monarch assured WISTA Nigeria of his full support and promised to mobilise participation from traditional rulers, local entrepreneurs and international business interests.
“I will facilitate participation from foreign and local business people and encourage more royal fathers to attend,” he said.
The royal father also commended Hon. Violet Williams for her efforts in promoting Lagos’ maritime history and inspiring young Nigerians to explore careers in the maritime industry.
He equally praised the Chairman of the WISTA Africa Regional Conference Planning Committee, Dr. Oma Ofodile, for recognizing the strategic importance of the Oniru Kingdom in maritime affairs.
Highlighting ongoing economic initiatives within his kingdom, Oba Lawal disclosed that the palace launched the Oniru Business and Cultural Day in 2025 and established the Iru Business Network to strengthen commerce and investment opportunities within the community.
He revealed that the kingdom has continued to engage key stakeholders, including operators in the hospitality sector and members of the Indian business community, with plans to deepen economic collaboration.
The monarch further pledged to partner with WISTA Nigeria in future business and maritime development programmes, particularly those aimed at exposing young people to opportunities in shipping, logistics and the wider blue economy.
Calling for stronger collaboration between government and coastal communities, Oba Lawal disclosed that he had submitted a proposal to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, advocating the establishment of a Lagos Coastal Community Development Commission.
According to him, several waterfront communities hosting critical national infrastructure have yet to experience the economic benefits generated by such investments.
“About nine local governments are bordered by water, yet communities do not feel the impact,” he said.
He cited areas including Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Apapa, Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Lekki and Epe as coastal areas deserving greater developmental attention.
The monarch pointed to major projects such as the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Deep Sea Port, Apapa Port and Tin Can Island Port as examples of infrastructure that should translate into tangible benefits for host communities.
Earlier, WISTA Nigeria President, Dr. Odunayo Ani, said the visit was to formally brief the monarch on preparations for the 8th WISTA Africa Regional Conference scheduled to hold from June 25 to 26, 2026, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
She explained that WISTA is a global organisation dedicated to empowering women in shipping, maritime and international trade, with a presence in more than 60 countries.
According to Ani, the conference, themed “From Policy to Implementation: Women Advancing Africa’s Blue Economy,” will bring together policymakers, investors, maritime leaders and industry professionals from across the continent and beyond.
She added that delegates attending the conference would also have the opportunity to experience the rich maritime heritage and cultural significance of the Oniru Kingdom.
The WISTA Nigeria delegation sought the monarch’s endorsement, goodwill message, blessings and participation in what is expected to be one of Africa’s leading maritime gatherings in 2026.
Among those present during the visit were WISTA Nigeria Secretary, Mrs. Lilian Nneji; Assistant Treasurer, Hajia Aisha Cole; Vice President of Women in Shipping Africa (WIMAFRICA), Mrs. Ogunniyi Temilade; Madam Blessing, as well as consultants Mr. Deji and Mr. Sam, among other members of the delegation.
