Mr Abdulrahmon Hussain, the Manager of Onne Seaport has reaffirmed the commitment of the Seaport to the welfare of the retirees.
Hussain made this known at the annual appreciation day for the retirees at the Port’s complex in Onne on Thursday where they were gifted with medicine and other medical services.
He said the event was to appreciate the retirees who have shown commitment, laid foundation and delivered their best towards the actualisation of the organisation’s mandates.
He said that the event was also in line with the Managing Director, Abubakr Dantsoho’s passion for a healthy and energetic retired group.
“We are here to appreciate our retirees because we acknowledge that the foundation we are standing upon today was laid by them.
“While in service, they mentored the junior officers and contributed immensely to the growth and development of this port. We want to sincerely show them that they are still members of this family.
“Aside from the multivitamins and other medicine provided, I feel the most important is the demonstration of love and care our senior citizens are getting from us today,” he said.
Speaking, the Chief Medical Officer Onne Port complex, Dr Bashir Kangiwa thanked the port manager for the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind.
He noted that the Nigeria Ports Authority’s (NPA) health policy also accommodated retirees and their spouses except in severe cases beyond facility’s capacity, where referrals to higher hospitals become necessary.
The beneficiaries commended NPA for the gesture.
Mr Okeke Uzoechi, a retired Electrical Engineer, on behalf of the retirees, promised to ensure sustainable partnership even as a retiree.
“Retirement is not condemnation, it is an avenue for us to look inwards and explore other areas of human endeavours so as to remain relevant,” he said.
