The House of Representatives committee on agricultural production and services and the federal ministry of agriculture have resolved to tackle the problem of rice smuggling that has been ravaging the industry.
They have also resolved to use agricultural avenues to create employment among the teeming unemployed youths in the country.
They reached the understanding at an interactive session yesterday between the committee, chaired by Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and officials of the agricultural ministry led by its minister, Audu Ogbeh.
Monguno said the session was to identify ways of moving the agricultural sector forward, which he said could create millions of jobs for Nigerians, especially the youths.
Ogbeh said there was need to take adequate measures to tackle rice smuggling into the country, saying Nigeria was losing a lot of revenue as a result of that.
He said in the last one month, about 300 trailers of rice were smuggled into the country, which was why the lawmakers have to come up with strong legislation that would curb such.
