SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited has graduated another batch of customs officers from an eight weeks “on-the-job” training designed to build up a team that would take over from the Destination Inspection (DI) service providers by December 31, 2012.
The ceremony which held recently at the company’s Lagos office is the seventh to be organised by SGS under the Nigeria Customs Service Secondment Programme. It entails training related to price verification, classification and risk management. Participants are also acquainted with the requirements and process leading to the issuance of Risk Assessment Reports (RARs), a vital document required by traders to clear their imports from the nation’s ports and border posts.
Comptroller General of Customs, Mr Abdullahi Dikko Inde, who was represented by Assistant Comptroller General E.O. Ofem described SGS has a partner in the new effort to rebrand the Service. “Management of Nigeria Customs Service is happy with quality of training provided by SGS, we see the company as a partner in the rebranding effort of the Comptroller General and his management team”, he said.
ACG Ofem enjoined the graduating officers to see themselves as the new face of the Service and described as being priviledged“to be chosen among many for this training, so please take advantage of this opportunity given to improve and do whatever task you would be assigned very well so that those coming behind you will meet a better Nigeria Customs Service”.
On his part, Managing Director of SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited Mr Nigel Balchin commended the officers for their good performance and charged the officers to put what they have been taught to good use when they are back to their posts.
He stressed that his organisation is committed to the smooth handover of its cargo scanning machines and other DI activities, including customs valuation, classification and risk management, to NCS by the end of 2012, in line with the contract signed with the Federal Government. “Our objective is to build up a team of well trained NCS officers that will take over our services under DI, the handover team will be in place next year. We will provide additional coaching to the handover team with the objective that they will act as trainers for others”, he said
And speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Assistant Comptroller of Customs T.A. Daniyan thanked the management of NCS for giving them the opportunity to undergo the training exercise. “I thank everyone that has been part of this journey, we’re proud to say that we have been highly impacted by SGS. I will say that we have been well trained and exposed to the best tools. I can boldly say that we are now fully baked. We count ourselves lucky and also grateful to the management of NCS for this opportunity. There is a lot Nigeria Customs Service can learn from a service provider like SGS”.
