The Centre for Marine Surveyors of Nigeria (CMSN) has urged ship owners to always consult professional surveyors for integrity reports before buying vessels.
The President and Chairman, Board of Trustees of CMSN, Mr Bambo Ademiluyi, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos last week.
Ademiluyi said a professional surveyor should be able to stand by every report he had written on a vessel.
“Professional surveyors are expensive but Nigerians like to pay peanuts," he said.
According to him, that is why many end up getting vessels that are not good and in the long run, do not make the trip to Nigeria.
“Professional surveyors are expensive because it costs money to train them; at first, a surveyor must be a graduate,’’ Ademiluyi said.
He said before a professional surveyor acquired certification, he had to undergo mentorship for more than two years, including sea-time training.
Ademiluyi said there was also the need for a surveyor to engage in continuous training in order to be well tested in the profession.
He said that members of the association were planning toward procuring professional indemnity insurance certificates to cover members of the centre
“Today, Nigeria has some of the best master mariners who have undergone the best training all over the country.
“Companies in Nigeria should make use of the services of indigenous professional surveyors, “ Ademiluyi said.
He said that the association was looking forward to the establishment of an Institute of Marine Surveyors in Nigeria which would assist in removing quacks.
Ademiluyi said that the association would extend its awareness campaign to financial institutions and maritime operators, to sensitise people on its relevance in the maritime sector.
