Even as the Federal Government have officially given the nod for the kick-off date of the Advance Cargo Information System, otherwise called International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN) the Nigerian Shippers Council have been charged to ensure that it embarks on training of maritime operators on the workings of the CTN.
Chief Executive of CSS Maritime and former General Manager of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Mr. Nnamdi Eronini gave the charge in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week.

Eronini argued that the Nigerian maritime industry is still shrouded in illiteracy and there is need for continuous education of the operators. He charged the Shippers Council to take it in its strides to come up with the training of operators, especially on the Cargo Tracking Note.
Apart from the CTN, Eronini said that some maritime stakeholders still do not know what the Cabotage Act is all about.
“When you talk of CTN a lot of people still don’t know what it means, in fact when you talk about Cabotage you will be surprised that a lot of people don’t really know what it is all about, there is a lot of need for training, enlightenment and education so that the more people that get to know, the better for the industry”
“One thing I know with Shippers Council is that among all the parastals, they are more of theoretical, they are more attuned to training and education” he said.
Eronini told Shipping Position Daily that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari should focus on the maritime industry and to give it enough attention in terms of education and enlightenment. He noted that a lot of resources are in the maritime sector, hence the need to attract young men and women into the industry.
“We some institutions dealing in maritime, but our main institution in the industry run by government is the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN Oron) there are still challenges in trying to bring it up so that we can compete, we should not actually be competing with Ghana, they should be the one running to catch up with us” he said.
