Barely three weeks after resumption for a new ‘voyage’, Rector, Stars Maritime Academy, Dr. Reuben Ovai has predicted a brighter future for cadets in private and government owned maritime institutes in the country.
Ovai in a chat with Shipping Position Daily said that the decision by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) to give approval for students to go into maritime institutions means well for the industry.
According to him, some of the maritime institutions are already in the brochure of JAMB and a bright future awaits the Nigerian youths who are interested to go into maritime education as a career.
The Rector explained that as the maritime institutions are fast gaining recognition in the country, there is hope for rapid boost in the industry as well as manpower development in the country.
The maritime academician noted that each year, there has been a steady progression on the number of intakes into most of the maritime institutions in the country.
He urged Nigeria youths to pick a career from maritime industry, saying   that it is endowed with plenty of opportunities.
He also assured old and new students of the school of intensive excursion to various shipping companies and terminals in the seaports to enable them to get firsthand knowledge of operations.
"Being the last session of the year, students will embark on various excursions to maritime establishments in the port through visiting shipping companies to get themselves abreast with the practical aspect of the profession".
The school is expected to close its (voyage) academic calendar in December.
