In order to provide a lasting solution to the traffic congestion around the Kirikiri end of Apapa, Lagos, which houses about six petroleum tank farms, residents of the area as well as the companies operating around the Kirikiri town have set up four different committees to monitor activities around the area and also look at how the traffic situation in the area can be controlled.

Residents of the Kirikiri town have over the years cried out to the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government to relocate the tank farms and other factories, including a cement company which have clustered the area. They have also fingered operators of small businesses such as the petty traders and beer parlour owners whose activities have given rise to an upsurge in both human and vehicular activities in the area.
Shipping Position Daily correspondent however gathered in Lagos yesterday that residents and stakeholders in the area, in conjunction with the commandant of the Kirikiri division of the Nigerian Navy, have formed four various committees to carry out investigations and proffer lasting solution about how to correct the reckless attitude of tanker drivers who turned every available space into a parking lots, thereby congesting the town.
The committees which comprise of 12 members each were reportedly put together last week at the monthly stakeholders’ meeting held with the navy where it was agreed that they are to come up with a full report which will be presented at the April meeting of the stakeholders.
Confirming the development to our correspondent, a member of one of the committees, Mr. Onwundiwe Onward who is also a NUPENG Techno Oil Unit executive said that, “at the last meeting, we had a resolution that the road should be maintained, if need be, we can alert the state government to assist in ensuring the flow of traffic on the entrance, we are driving heavy duty trucks and lives may be at risk if anything should happen, the products are highly inflammable, so there is not supposed to be anything hindering the traffic”
Onwundiwe said that as a way of ensuring compliance, the tank farms have been warned to only programme the capacity of trucks they can handle daily, according to him, only these trucks are to come in, load and go away.
“We are working with NUPENG to see that the road is not congested again and the activities of men of the navy, to a large extent has helped in assuaging the general feeling of complacency” he said.
Another source also told our correspondent that the Nigerian Navy has painstakingly started posting their men to control the chaotic traffic situation in the town.
According to the source who prefers not to be mentioned, “in addition to this, the policemen who usually conduct illegal stop -and- check around Kadesoh street have suddenly stopped extorting money from people”.
He said that rather, all efforts are now being channeled towards traffic control which will further help in checking the chaotic nature of traffic in the area.
