Despite the lull in vehicles importation to the country due to high exchange rate ,fresh facts have emerged that shippers preferred fairly used vehicles otherwise known as Tokunboh vehicles from the United State of America (USA).
Auto Port Weekly checks confirmed that New York City, Texas and other notable seaports are where Nigerian shippers prefer to buy in large quantity due to proximity to the ports.
However patronage of dealership by Nigerian importers of vehicles, mostly scout for their choices in the states where there are seaports.
Operators who spoke with our correspondent last week revealed that the most of the cars shipped to Nigeria from USA are neat when compared to those from European countries.
It was also gathered that scouting for used cars in America is easier when compared to other countries across the globe.
Importers and clearing agents who spoke to our correspondent stated that the neatness of any fairly used vehicle from the America attracts dealers and even the buyers in Nigeria prefer clean vehicles.
Chairman Tin Can Island Chapter, Association of Registered Freight Forwarders of Nigeria (AREFFN), Mr. Jude Ige said that cars shipped from America are more feasible in Nigeria compared to those from other parts of the world.
He also said that apart from America; Nigerian importers also ship in vehicles from the United Kingdom, Belguim , Germany, Holland and Spain.
He said apart from USA, Germany and Belgium are also known for vehicles importation.
According to him, the America has the largest market for fairly used cars when compared to other parts of the world.
Also speaking on the development, a foremost clearing agent operating from Tin Can Island Port, Mr. Idowu Adelusumi maintained that cars made for American citizens are always special, a reason he said gave rise for Nigerian importers trooping there to buy.
He disclosed further that American specs are well known by Nigerian car dealers and despite the factory defects which sometimes make the manufacturers to recall such vehicles in large quantity , the attraction by Nigerians is always there.
The foremost clearing agents said there are pockets of markets scattered all over many states in America, adding that there are dealership for all categories of vehicles.
Adelusumi noted that in other parts of the world like Germany and Belgium, the market for fairly used vehicles are limited and transportation of such vehicles to the nearest seaport may be an addition cost.
The clearing agent however explained that in the USA, there are car markets everywhere and Nigerian dealers are dominant in the area of used car dealership.
