Five new patrol vehicles have been deployed to the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service to boost its anti-smuggling efforts within the riverine community and  the out stations.

However, the controller said that Kebbi State out station needs the vehicles more than others because according to him, there is no functional vehicle in that outstation.

Five new patrol vehicles have been deployed to the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service to boost its anti-smuggling efforts within the riverine community and  the out stations.

Customs Area Controller of the Command; Comptroller Yusuf Umar dropped the hint in chat with newsmen in Lagos last week.

However, the controller said that Kebbi State out station needs the vehicles more than others because according to him, there is no functional vehicle in that outstation.
Umar further said that apart from the north-based unit under the Western Marine Command, other out stations will also benefit from the vehicles.

Though the vehicles are yet to arrive at the command, but the controller reiterated that "as soon as they arrive, they will be deployed to strategic positions in order to address the illicit activities within the command's jurisdiction"

He also commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Inde Abdullahi for his massive support and encouragement in the fight against smuggling.

Comptroller Umar said that Customs boss has been supportive of the command's growth because according to him, in the last six months, there has been rapid development and manpower capacity building for officers in the Western Marine Command.

He further appealed to smugglers to desist from their illicit activities, saying that the customs are getting sophisticated by the day in the quest to reduce smuggling activities in the country to the barest minimum.

He added that the new vehicles by customs management to patrol and police the riverine communities and other routes will further complement the two seagoing vessels that have also been procured for the command.
