The Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, CP Oluwatoyin Agbaminoja, has charged terminal operators and port facility security officers to deepen intelligence sharing and strict compliance with security protocols to safeguard Nigeria’s Western Ports.
The charge was given recently, when the Police boss met with Port Security Officers (PSOs) and Chief Security Officers (CSOs) of terminal operators across the Western Ports corridor as part of renewed efforts to consolidate security and operational efficiency within the port environment.
Leading the delegation were the Port Security Officer of Apapa Port, Mr. Buka Kaumi, and the Port Security Officer of Tin Can Island Port, Mr. Eleta Paulinus, alongside CSOs representing different terminals operating in the area.
CP Agbaminoja said the ports remain critical national assets that must be protected through synergy between law enforcement and private security stakeholders. She noted that proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and continuous engagement with operators remain central to the Command’s strategy for crime prevention and uninterrupted port activities.
She urged stakeholders to promptly report suspicious movements, strengthen internal surveillance mechanisms and sustain seamless information flow capable of neutralising threats before they escalate. According to her, effective cooperation is key to preventing criminal activities that could disrupt trade and economic growth.
A major highlight of the meeting was the review of waterways security under Operation SAFE EMBERS. The Commissioner said the initiative would focus on tighter patrol coordination, improved surveillance and enhanced intelligence sharing to secure port waterways and adjoining maritime corridors against emerging threats.
The PSOs and terminal CSOs, in their responses, praised the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command for ensuring stability across the Western Ports during the Yuletide and New Year period. They said the Command’s visibility and deployment strategy helped sustain a peaceful and business-friendly environment for port users.
They also pledged continued partnership with the Police to strengthen the safety architecture of the ports and ensure that the Western Ports remain secure hubs for maritime and commercial activities.
