NPA Senior Staff Association Wants Agency to Become Ports Regulator

The President of Senior Staff Association, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr Jimoh Umar, has argued that NPA has the wherewithal to regulate commercial activities at the nation’s ports.
Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that government should give the NPA the responsibility of regulating activities at the ports.
“If the NPA cannot do the job, then which organisation can do it? I think NPA should be left to do the regulation,’’ he said.

Umar said that the job of regulating port activities had been left for the port administrators in many countries.
“Countries like Italy, Singapore, South Africa and even Ghana have the same maritime policy like Nigeria and also have their ports' authorities as regulators,’’ he said.
The union leader said that the NPA had a strong workforce that would ensure that the regulatory assignment would be ably done.
On the Ports and Habour Bill currently before the National Assembly, he said that there was nothing wrong with the subsisting NPA laws.
“The laws are plain and enough to cover the operations of ports in Nigeria,’’ he said.
He said that what the government needed to do was to call for a summit of maritime professionals to look for ways the subsisting laws could work.
