The Port Manager of Port Harcourt Ports, Mr. Dele Alabi has that Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) has succeeded in removing five critical wrecks along the Port Harcourt and Bonny Water Channels, making it safer for ships calling at the port.
Mr. Alabi disclosed this in a press statement issued by the Chief Port Public Affairs Officer of Port Harcourt ports Mrs. B. Ejemeh Nchey – Achukwu.
According to the statement, the ports manager, said that the wrecks removal on the water channels has improved free flow of vessels on the channels.

According to the statement, the ports manager, said that the wrecks removal on the water channels has improved free flow of vessels on the channels.
He noted that the wrecks had been a major challenge on the water channels which he said had constituted obstruction for easy vessels movement/access to port areas.
“These wrecks on the water channels from Port Harcourt to Bonny, were the ones that affect us in Berth 8 of Port Harcourt Ports” Mr. Alabi stated unequivocally.
He added that since the removal of the wrecks through the commitment of federal government and support of the NPA management, it has brought big relieve to operators and ocean liners.
“Let me tell you, that since the removal of these obstructions (the wrecks), it has made the berths safer for vessels to sail to these berths”, the port manager said.
He acknowledged that ‘berth 8’ had not been too strong because of aging, and added that regrettably the berth collapsed in 2010.
He however noted that, having put the berth back to order, the removal of the five major wrecks on the channels linking Port Harcourt Ports and Bonny has assisted to improve navigation in and out of the berths.
Asked to comment on the performances of the terminal operators at Port Harcourt ports since the commencement of federal government concession policy, Mr. Alabi came out strong in defence of the operators.
“We access the terminal operators technically, already, NPA has put in place a technical crew for the assessment of terminal operators, to ensure that they keep the tenets of the agreement,” Mr. heclarified.
He said that based on that, he believes that the terminal operators have done well, even though he said that the increased throughput of vessels may have gone beyond their capacity
