The Lagos Chapter of the Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), has elected Miss Loveth Haruna as its first female chairperson, marking a historic milestone in the association’s leadership.
The election, held on Friday, recorded full participation by members and was adjudged free, fair, and credible by the Electoral Committee. A total of 64 votes were cast, all in Haruna’s favour, underscoring the overwhelming support she enjoys within the chapter.
Other elected executives are: Essiet Aniekan (Vice Chairman), Tobi Kalejaiye (Secretary-General), Akhighu Louis (Assistant Secretary-General), Frank Anthony (Welfare Secretary), Reuben Untenge (Financial Secretary), Esther Mogoli (Treasurer), and Ngwoke Pueth (Provost Marshal).
The only contested position was that of Public Relations Officer (PRO), where Adekunle Sowade polled 35 votes to defeat Gbadeyan Oluwaseun, who secured 29 votes.
In her acceptance remarks, Haruna expressed appreciation to members for entrusting her with the leadership of the chapter, pledging to work with her team to strengthen the association and initiate programmes that will advance its objectives.
Maritime stakeholders have described the development as a significant stride for gender inclusion and leadership diversity within the sector, noting that Haruna’s emergence reflects the growing recognition of women’s contributions to maritime development.
