The Port of Le Havre Authority (GPMH) has begun the final phase in the development of its Port 2000 deep-water container terminal which can accommodate the biggest ships in service today.
A Call for Interest to operate the last two berths of the terminal closed on 1 October. But the GPMH has declined to disclose details of the response from potential candidates, the level of investment required nor when the berths are likely to enter service.
Port 2000 opened in 2006 and today comprises 10 berths, with shipping lines CMA CGM and MSC each operating four of them and Maersk two.
MSC and cargo-handling operator Terminaux de Normandie (TN) invested €160 million on a 50:50 basis through a joint-venture company, TNMSC, in their four berths at Port 2000.
The project also attracted €270 million of public funding, focusing on dredging the access channel to the port and building the 1,400 sq metres of quayside.
The two new berths will offer a total of 700 sq metres of quayide and a container storage area of 36 hectares. taking the total number of berths to 12.
At full build-out, with 12 berths, Port 2000 will have the capacity to handle between 4.5m and 5m teu annually.
Separately, GPMH issued another Call for Interest to lengthen one of two quays at the port’s Normandie box terminal which is currently not in use.
In the first nine months of this year Le Havre handled almost 1.9 million teu, up 6% on the same period in 2012.
