The government of Malta recently has become the 34th International Labour Organization member state and the 12th European Union member state to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, which addresses standards for the working and living conditions of seafarers, as well as conditions for fair competition for shipowners.

The government of Malta recently has become the 34th International Labour Organization member state and the 12th European Union member state to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, which addresses standards for the working and living conditions of seafarers, as well as conditions for fair competition for shipowners.
The International Transport Workers’ Federation today gave its “cautious approval” to the progress made across the shipping industry to prepare for the convention’s entry into operation on Aug. 20. ITF has been monitoring preparation efforts and launching projects to explain and support the legislation.
“We are continuously pushing for further ratifications,” said Dave Heindel, chair of the ITF seafarers’ section, in a written statement. “Whether they are major port states or flag states, it is vital that everyone involved in shipping has ratified.”
