Polaris Maritime Institute, a Merchant Navy Academy has said that what distinguished it from other private maritime institutions is the assurance of sea time for all its cadets, it said that this is made possible through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which it has with some shipping companies Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute, Captain Banjo Daniel Akintunde disclosed this to Shipping Position Daily correspondent in Lagos last week.
Captain Akintunde said that the Institute has been involved in the MOU for a long time now, even as he mentioned the shipping companies to include; Bold Shipping Company Ltd, Ship and Shore Nigeria Ltd, Savannah Shipping Company Limited now known as Shrimpers Nigeria Ltd, Maersk/ P&O Nedloyds Shipping Line, among others.
According to him, the shipping companies are the one that will absorb the cadets of the institute for practical experiences and sea time.
"We have a vision statement which is to raise maritime competent experts, Polaris Maritime Institute is private owned and approved by both the state and Federal Ministry of Education”, he stressed.
“What makes us different from other institutions is that we have relationships with at least eight shipping companies, they have signed a memorandum of understanding with Polaris Maritime Institute which simply implies that once we have students in the school, these shipping companies will inform and absorb our cadets for practical experiences, he explained”.
He boasted that where others still lobby for vessels, the case of Polaris is different because the shipping companies make their vessels available for practical purposes for its cadets and trainees.
“If you go to the industry today, apart from the government-owned maritime institution in Nigeria which is, Maritime Academy Of Nigeria, Oron, Federal College Of Fisheries And Marine Technology at Victoria island, the next to be mentioned is Polaris Maritime Institute" he stated.
He went further to say that three major categories of courses are offered at the institution, they are; shipping management, marine engineering and nautical sciences.
“The people we train are in two categories, we have the graduates and the Secondary School Certificate (SSCE), we have hostel facilities for all of our students, and we have a conducive environment for male and female respectively.
