Even though it has had two acting Director Generals within three days, the Federal Government has commenced moves to appoint a substantive CEO for the strategic Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Even though it has had two acting Director Generals within three days, the Federal Government has commenced moves to appoint a substantive CEO for the strategic Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Shipping Position Daily confirmed last week that moves by a former DG (names withheld) to stage a come-back has been rebuffed by the team that is currently screening three nominees for the office of DG NIMASA.
Our findings in Abuja and Lagos revealed that even though the former DG has the requisite qualifications, the attempt to be reappointed has failed.
However, three persons are currently being screened for the prime position. Insiders confirm that two of the applicants are from outside the maritime industry, while only one is currently an active player in the Nigerian maritime sector.
The three of them are said to possess qualifications that are in tandem with Sections 6 & 7 of NIMASA Act, which stipulates that, the DG if NIMASA must possess “relevant experience and capacity applicable to maritime administration, recognized expert knowledge, qualification and experience in one or more of the following fields.”
The fields are maritime safety, maritime security, maritime pollution, nautical sciences and hydrographic and maritime engineering, finance, marine law, transport logistics, administration and marine labour.
Efforts by our correspondents to confirm the identities of the the trio that are currently jostling for the coveted post were futile as none of our sources was ready to divulge any further information, beyond the fact that a former CEO attempted a come back.
The sources however stated categorically that the duo of Barrister Callistus Obi and Mr Haruna Baba Jauro are not even in the picture.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that, while Obi was announced as the acting DG on Tuesday, he was replaced by Jauro on Friday.
A statement by NIMASA on Friday disclosed that, Mr Jauro’s  “appointment was communicated through a letter issued by the Federal Ministry of Transport. He takes over from Barrister Calistus Obi who hitherto was the Acting Director General”.
Until his appointment, Mr. Jauro was the Executive Director, Finance and Administration in the Agency.
The appointment of the new acting DG was the climax of three days of intense lobby by the duo.
Jauro claimed the Obi was appointed acting DG in error as he was the most senior Executive Director, even both of them were appointed same day (July 24,) 2012. According to the new acting DG , he resumed at NIMASA as Executive Director, a clear 24 hours before Obi.
