A transportation expert and consultant to AG Dangote; Mr. Kunle Opeifa, has called for collaboration among Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and other agencies to ensure proper diversion of traffic throughout the duration of the Apapa Wharf road reconstruction.
Mr. Opeifa, who is also a former commissioner for transport, Lagos state made this plea last week in Lagos at a stakeholders meeting on reconstruction of the road leading to Apapa port (Apapa Wharf road).
Speaking at the meeting, he also said that they do not want any demonstration or strike while the reconstruction is going on, even as he cautioned that no trucker should he harassed by any security personnel.
He also maintained that the construction company has made plans for National Union of Petroleum Exportation and Natural Gas (NUPENG) and Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) on how to assess the tank farms to load petroleum products.
According to him, “the project has started already with the palliatives that we put in place. There is need for collaboration with each other especially the LASTMA, FRSC in the area of diversion of traffic. We do not want any demonstration or strike so we don’t want any trucker to be harassed by anyone. We have made plans for NUPEND and PTD for them to move. When we start fixing the Wharf road, there will be palliatives at Tincan so that there will be movement at that side.
Speaking further, he also accused truckers of deliberately blocking the road thereby making movement difficult even on public holidays.
“One of the major cause of the problems we are having there are the truckers, they will deliberately block the road even on public holidays. We are going to create access road for them to get to the ports, but they must not park or block the road. We want the road to be free within the next seven days for us to commence work” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the LASTMA has promised to bring out the traffic divergent plans today, being 3rd July 2017.
In his speech the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Wale Musa, said, “We are promising our support and collaboration to the project. If proper security measures are not put in place, I will not be releasing my men because we have had cases where they were attacked in the cause of doing their work. We will bring out the traffic divergent plans by Monday” he concluded.
