The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has debunked claims that some of its operatives are collecting money from smugglers to allow fairly-used vehicles to enter into the country through the Seme border.
This is coming some days after a tweeter user; “Abdullahi Aliyu” accused officers of the service of collecting money from smugglers to allow vehicles come through unapproved routes.
But, in a statement made available to newsmen, the Public Relations Officer of Seme Area command, Abdullahi Onawo, an Assistant Controller of Customs (AC) described such claims as the figment of the claimant's imagination.
Explaining further, Onawa said that the command went further to carry out preliminary investigation and found out that there is no iota of truth in what was alleged adding that the report remained unfounded.
“We are calling on the public especially social media users to do proper findings before throwing such serious allegation on tweeter with a targeted aim of dampening the morale of its officers that are days and night to keep our borders safe”
The spokesman said since the inception of the border drill, the command has recorded tremendous achievements in its anti-smuggling operations
He said the command had so far intercepted 55 used smuggled vehicles worth billions of naira adding that tweeter handler’s claims on tweeter should not be taken seriously hence there wasn’t any evidence to back his claims.
Recall that the tweeter handler; Abubakar Aliyu had on 2ndNovember taken to his tweeter handle on @Abubakar Aliyu claiming that customs officers were collecting money in exchange for illegal passage of fairly-used vehicles into the country despite border drill
However, the Customs spokesman advised the general public with tangible evidence that can assist the command to come forward with it in other to help tackle the menace adding that it is for the benefit of all
