The US Coast Guard (USCG) said it has suspended its search for a missing crew member who fell of a container ship near the Ambrose Channel, New York, on October 27.
At approximately 8:30 am local time, the USGC New York received a call from the containership Northern Jaguar that a 35-year-old crewmember had fallen overboard while arranging a pilot ladder in 15-foot seas and 35 mile per hour winds.
The Northern Jaguar is docked at Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, as of 01:38 local time on October 28. It had most recently called at Pasir Panjang Wharves in Singapore. Its destination was the Port of Charleston.
Crews from the USCG searched for 24 hours and covered more than 460 square miles, but have now suspended pending any further developments.
Captain Jason Tama, commander of Coast Guard Sector New York, commented: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends involved in this case. The suspension of an active search and rescue case is a difficult decision to make.
"Factors such as water temperature, weather conditions, and length of time the person has been missing, inform the decision".
