The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has rejected the resignation letter of the Chairman of the Association Electoral Committee (ASECO); Alhaji Babatunde Mukaila, which he submitted last weekend.
This was the outcome of an emergency meeting between the BoT and the National Executive Committee (NECOM) of the association which held at its national secretariat yesterday,
The meeting was called to find a lasting solution to the festering face-off between the ASECO and BoT over conduct of the elections into some of its chapters in Lagos, especially Tin Can Port chapter.
But at the meeting yesterday, the BoT Chairman, Chief Henry Njoku refused top accept the ASECO chairman’s resignation. Rather, he directed the body to finalise the elections including the Tin Can Chapter elections within the next two weeks.
Sources at the meeting confirmed to Shipping Position Daily that the contentious issues of the use of a document (Form C30) for the conduct of the elections has also been laid to rest as Chief Njoku stated that he never authorised the use of the document as a compulsory requirement for the election.
"The Board Chairman informed the meeting that his orders were that all the licenses that intend to contest and vote in the elections should be confirmed by the Tin Can Island command of Nigeria Customs"
"Njoku stated categorically that he himself does not have a Form C30, so the bottom line now is that all the 170 licenses so far cleared by ASECO will be allowed to vote, provided they are original and valid with the customs" the source said.
Our correspondent also confirmed that contrary to the fireworks expected at the meeting, it was a very brief meeting devoid of confrontations.
When our correspondent contacted the ASECO Chairman, he refused to comment on the new resolutions reached at the meeting. He directed that all questions should be directed to the ANLCA National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kayode Farinto.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Publicity Secretary, Kayode Farinto confirmed the developments.
He said that the National Executive Council has equally extended the tenure of the incumbent executives of the concerned chapters by two weeks.
On the use of the Form C30, he said, "we are expecting ASECO to come up with their modality for the election; the BoT has issued a 13 working days ultimatum to ASECO to conclude the elections"
"Also, the NEC has extended the tenure of the incumbent executives" he said.
