The Governing board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has promised to resuscitate the dilapidated Nigerian Maritime Resource and Development Centre (NMRDC) and ensure that its up and functional.
Chairman Governing board of NIMASA, Major General Garba Jonathan (rtd) stated this in Lagos yesterday after taking a tour of the kirikiri based centre.
He expressed dissapointement at the level of dilapidation at the resources centre, saying that past management of NIMASA have failed to make use of the centre for the purppose it was created.
After interacting with the staff of the agency, he assured that the board would put policies in place to tackle all the challenges identified on the tour.
He also promised that staff welfare and promotion would be tackled frontally by the board in collaboration with the management led by Mr. Dakuku Peterside.
"We have gone round this facility, it is suppose to represent Nigeria and Africa as a whole and present us to the world, but after taking this tour we bow our heads in shame"
"There are deficiencies and these deficiencies are not the fault of this present management of NIMASA, but rather than dwell on the failures of the past administration, we would put policies in place to ensure this place comes back to life" he said
He also promised to improve on the workers welfare and ensure that promotion is done annually.
Speaking earlier, Coordinator of the centre, Architect George Inyang lamented the high level of dilapidation of facilities and abandoned projects. He said that there is unreliability of power and water supply, food canteen for staff, insecurity and other environmental hazards.
He said that the resource centre has been relegated to a punishment ground for staff whose faces the management does not like to see. According to him, NIMASA have not also maintained good relationship with the host community at Kirikiri
