The Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers’ Council; Barrister Hassan Bello has urged journalists in the country to pay attention to their health as their first priority, adding that media practitioners must provide healthcare insurance scheme for employees.
Bello stated this during a Colloquium in honour of late maritime journalist and former President of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN); Chief Jimmy Ubon Akpan.
Bello hinted that the economy would not be complete without the efforts of journalists to nation building, even as he reiterated that there is the need for healthy living.
According to him “we will like to suggest that there should be a structure on health to be instituted for journalists.
“Aside that of health insurance we also want to suggest that issues of insurance should be looked into as well.
“If you don’t check you health you would not know and that is the reason we advocating for all these benefits for journalists.
"We know journalist are always at risk from one illness from the other, and will like y the news hunters to be health conscious."
He however called on maritime reporters to support and encourage the family of the deceased.
Speakers at the colloquium included staff from the medical departments of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Shipper’s Council (NSC) and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
