The Customs Area 2 Command in Onne, Rivers State has arrested five persons for allegedly broaching a container loaded with assorted drugs.
Briefing journalists in Onne yesterday, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Comptroller Aliyu Galadima Saidu disclosed that the five were arrested on July 30, 2019 after breaking and opening a 40-foot container loaded with assorted drugs.
He said the drugs were loaded into two vehicles namely a Mercedez Benz Jeep with registration number: EPE 828 AR (M/Benz) and a Toyota Camry with registration number: EKY 159 BD.
He said assorted drugs such as Tramadol Tablets, Extra-analgesic and anti-inflammative tablets, and others were in the container.
According to him, “an interim committee was immediately set up to investigate the incident, with the five suspects and the vehicles detained, as at then”.
He disclosed that an officer was instructed to play along with the suspects.
“An exhibit of one million naira (sic) was recovered from an Officer who was instructed to play along in the deal in order to get to the architect of the conspiracy”, the Controller said.
H added that the five suspects are to be prosecuted.
“It is regrettable to note that while the Nigeria Customs Service is working round the clock to free this country of illicit goods, some recalcitrant and unpatriotic citizens are not relenting in their desperate urge to sabotage our efforts by spreading harmful drugs”, he lamented.
