The Nigerian Shippers ' Council has said that it will partner with the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) in Zarai for effective human and capacity building development in the agency.
Executive Secretary; Barrister Hassan Bello stated this in Lagos yesterday during a courtesy visit by top officials of the Government-owned transport training institution led by its Director General, Dr. Aminu Yusuf.
According to the executive secretary, there is need to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)by both institutions , even as he urged the transportation academy to be creative and competitive in ensuring that it stays afloat in capacity building programmes for the industry.
The executive secretary noted that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council is a knowledge-driven organisation and there is need for the maritime sector to be driven by specialised knowledge.
He also described transportation as a profession which needs personnel to get the required knowledge before embracing the profession.
Speaking further, Bello lauded efforts made so far by the institute in training, stressing that NITT has trained a large number of professionals in the transport sector of the economy.
He also reiterated the need for NITT to be creative, urging it to put in place awareness campaign programme to move the training outfit forward.
Bello maintained that there is need to reform the freight forwarding practice for better performance for the industry growth noting that the Council has been a strong advocate for the practitioners to get adequate training.
"The two institutions are knowledge-driven, what we do is to get the required knowledge because it is the knowledge that drives the industry and so many mistakes have been made due to lack of knowledge and Nigeria will suffer for it"
"But now the choices we have for the industry are limited and we cannot afford to make such mistakes and therefore we have to patronise this fountain of knowledge called NITT"
The council's boss however described the NITT programmes as innovative and modern , saying that transport is a significant component of the Nigerian economy.
Speaking earlier, Director General of NITT, said the institute has been able to put in place measures to pursue transport education development programme to set agenda for the overall development of the sector.
Yusuf said, "we have also submitted proposal for a joint two day workshop with the NSC on the rolw of transport and logistics in international trade in Nigeria and this is in addition to the training proposal sent to your office for consideration "
"We are also appealing to the council to look into the possibility of investing in the infrastructural development of the institute and jointly carry out research projects on transport and logistics to further find solutions on specific problems", he stated.
