Personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) from the Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, on yesterday killed a suspected smuggler at Sango-Ota in Ogun.
It was gathered that the operatives of the Customs had pursued the smugglers to the Tollgate axis, and there was a clash, which resulted into shooting.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Bimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspected smuggler was killed during a gun duel.
Oyeyemi said that officers of the NCS had intercepted some smugglers at the toll gate in Ota.
They, however, resisted arrest and opened fire and in the exchange, the yet to be identified man was killed.
”There was a gun fire between the officials of the NCS and the smugglers at the toll-gate, Ota, Ogun that brought about the death of one of the smugglers’’ he said.
The spokesman said that the police had, however, restored peace in the area and prevented loss of innocent lives.
He said that the police had started investigation into the incident.
Also confirming the clash between the FOU Customs officials and the smugglers, the Public Relations Officer at the FOU in Ikeja, Mr Jerry Attah stated that the customs personnel were attacked when they intercepted vehicles loaded with poultry products and rice.
“They were smugglers, they attacked our officers and wanted to retake the vehicles and the items that were seized, but we were able to move the vehicles and the products t our office here in Ikeja”, he told Shipping Position Daily.
