The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has vowed to take legal action against any importer of sub-standard products into the country.
The agency‘s Public Relations Officer (PRO); Mr. Bola Fashina, said this recently in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos.
The spokesperson also disclosed that the suspects arrested last year in connection with the importation of substandard tyres are already in court.
"Our plans have not changed for all the substandard products that will get in here, we will seize them. Once we get them we will go through the law and we have also promised that any body arrested will be persecuted. Just yesterday some people were prosecuted at Lagos High court. As I am talking to you the prosecution of those who brought substandard tyres last year is still ongoing. So we will only intensify our efforts and anybody we catch, we will prosecute"
Also speaking on the registration of port service providers introduced by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Fashina, maintained that the process does not stop them from carrying g out their duties at the ports.
"The registration of port service providers as introduced by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council does not affect us; it doesn't stop us from going our works. Once we are invited by customs, we will go there and do our work"
On the plans by the agency registering their presence at the Kadunna Inland Dry Port (KIDP), just like their sister agency, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NAFDAC) has done, the SON spokesperson said that as an agency of the government, SON will only be where the government wants them to be.
"On the issue of SON getting office at the Kadunna Inland Dry Port (KIDP), we will only be where the government wants us to be”.
