Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) has advocated the need for Nigerians to take advantage of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in settling crisis in their domains.
The institute has also disclosed that it trained young practitioners with practical knowledge, tools and insight that will improve their practice of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in the country.
Pioneer President of the Maritime Arbitrators Association of Nigeria (MAAN); Mrs Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivour, who spoke recently at the 2018 National Conference of the institute in Abuja said the use of ADR will go a long way in settling so many crises in the country if the clause in the dispute resolution is put to use.
According to Rhodes-Vivour who is also the National Chairperson of the institute, UK, Nigeria branch and permanent member Court of Arbitration at the Hague, said that it would also help the judicial system in decongesting the workload before the nation’s court, and reduce the time in resolving disputes.
“This will not only help in decongesting the nation’s court, reduce the time in revolving dispute, it will also promote economic development.
“The use of ADR will also boost the confidence of investors who are always looking for safe environment to put their investments.
“The 2018 conference will also touch some of the country’s laws, as we are going to start policy dialogue, the conference will also discuss different challenges to our laws,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs Folake Sadiq, the President, Young Members Group (YMG) of CIArb said that the training of the young arbitrators became necessary to equip the YMG and would improve their practice of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in the country.
The theme of the conference is “I am qualified, now what next”.
Mrs Rhodes-Vivour, however commended the YMG members for their interest in being part of the reputable organisation.
Rhodes-Vivour said that CIArb was a global hub for practitioners, policy makers , academics and those in business.
According to her, the CIArb is now composed of over 16,000 members across 133 countries in the world, while membership spans continents and supported by an international network of 40 branches.
“The YMG should build up their reputation with clear focus on what our institute stands for. When faced with challenges, remember that anything that happens to us life is both an opportunity and a challenge.
“When we meet the challenge in an appropriate manner, not compromising our standards of our integrity, the situation invariably takes us to a greater height.
“Remember even though as a young members do not expect special favours,” Rhodes-Vivour said.
She however advised the youth that credentials, credibility and availability to carry out the task were essential to their career progression.
