Determined to enlighten and educate its officers on the best way to put in their best in their responsibility of blocking revenue leakages, the Apapa command on the Nigeria Customs Service said it is engaging in constant aggressive updating of officers.
The Controller in charge of the Apapa area command of the service, Comptroller Jubrin Musa, who said this recently in Lagos, also said that the commend encourages officers to update themselves.
He also reemphasized the need for the staff to be educated saying that the more educated they are the more they can relate with other stakeholders and carry out their duties effectively.
"We also engaged in aggressive updating of our staff, we encouraged a lot of staff to read all the laws from the nomenclature to the indexes and all other books, to make sure that they are well informed and educated because the more educated they are the more they can also relate with other stakeholders and the more they can do what they are supposed to do correctly".
Speaking on the strategies deployed by the command to block revenue leakages, Comptroller Musa said that there have been constant sensitization programme with the importers and freight forwarders.
He said that the sensitization is aimed at teaching the stakeholders on the need for them to always pay correct duty.
He maintained that no nation grows without payment of taxes by tax payers.
"There is also this sensitization programme which I mentioned earlier, especially with the importers and agents to appreciate the fact factor that paying of tax is a way of helping oneself. Because no nation grows and boosts its economy without having a robust and effective taxation system in place"
He encouraged stakeholders to pay their taxes adding that it is the taxes that the government uses to run the country.
"When you pay these taxes, they are what you use in running the affairs of the three tiers of government. So we encourage people to know that when you pay tax it is like you ate building yourself", he concluded.
