The Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria (CISN) has announced the establishment of a new tertiary institution called Coastal Polytechnic, in Lagos State.
This was disclosed by the President of CISN, Emeritus Professor Adalemo Ayinde Isaac at the 18th Annual Lecture, Investiture and Awards Ceremony of the institute in Badagry, Lagos.
The CIS event also witnessed the commissioning of an ultra-modern engineering workshop for its students.
The CISN President said that the institute is upgrading both its academic and professional programmes and effort is being made to establish a full-fledged university as well as to even upgrade the institution into a polytechnic status.
He also stated that the polytechnic will commence educational activities in the first quarter of 2016.
"I am happy to officially announce the establishment of Coastal Polytechnic, Lagos proposed to take- off early 2016, after a formal routine accreditation and inspection visit by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Federal Ministry of Education”, he stated.
According to him, the institute early this year received approval from the board to go ahead and establish a polytechnic, saying that it was an uphill task to achieve.
"The tall order has driven us to make committed efforts and investment in putting together the ultra-modern engineering centre"
"The journey was an uphill task especially because of the limited time we were given to provide such magnificent resource centre and the huge financial demands for the machines and equipment", he added.
Meanwhile, the CIS also honoured 15 distinguished maritime personalities as fellows of the school.
Top on the list is the Chief of Naval Staff , Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas, President of the Nigerian Institute of Freight Forwarding and Customs Brokers (NIFFCB), Dr. Zebulon Ikokide and the Deputy General Manager (Operations), Kaduna Inland Containers Nigerian Limited, Mr. Rotimi Oludele Raimi among others.
