The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside has said that the agency has trained more than 2000 of its personnel through its monthly ‘in-house knowledge transfer session’ in the last one year.
Petersie stated this recently while addressing the press in Lagos. He said that staff of the apex maritime agency had also benefitted from various training programmes by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) International Labor Organization (ILO) United States office for Drug and Crime among others.
He explained that the monthly in-house knowledge transfer sessions is a programme in which an experienced hand within the agency comes up to train other junior colleagues. According to him, the session is divided into the leadership series and the management series.
“We have adopted a three trunk approach to the training of our personnel, first is very innovative, we have set up the in-house knowledge transfer session, every month, we get very experienced persons in NIMASA to transfer knowledge to younger ones and junior colleagues, we have a technical series and a leadership/management series”
“If you have the volume of human capacity that we have grown over time, you will agree that even external training would not give us much value, somebody just gave me a detailed analysis and sent to me in that in few months that we started the knowledge transfer session, we have trained more than 2000 persons”
“The way training is evaluated is that if one person goes for three training, it becomes three persons and not one person again because that one person would train at least two other persons”
“The second one is in the area of Technical Corporation and training from agencies both multilateral and bilateral. We have received four training in the past one year from the IMO and other bilateral agencies. We got training from the United States office for Drug and Crime, from the ILO and so on. So our people have benefited optimally from training from these multilateral and bilateral agencies”
“The third leg is our regular training, we are doing this to ensure that our people obtain the optimal benefit of training, it is not enough to send people for training and for them to get allowance, we must look at the added value” he said
